Women's Soccer Opens Up NEWMAC Play With 1-1 Tie With Babson

Springfield, Mass. – September 27, 2008 – For the second time this week, the Springfield College women’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie, this time versus Babson in its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener.

With the win, the Pride improve to 4-2-2, 0-0-1 in league play, while the Beavers drop to 5-2-3, 0-0-1.

In a very physical contest between these two conference rivals, the Pride struck first just before the first half came to a close. With time winding down, Gina Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) fed Jen Jahoda (Lebanon, Conn.) off a free kick, who then in turn found the back of the net with just nine seconds remaining to give Springfield a 1-0 advantage.

The Beavers tied the game at the 61:32 mark as Patty Pytlik’s shot from inside the box found the lower left hand corner of the goal.

Neither team could find muster another goal in the regulation, nor the two overtime sessions, as the game ended in a draw.

Pride keeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) finished with three saves in goal, while Sarah Macary made five stops for the Beavers. Springfield held a 10-9 advantage in shots in the closely contested game.

The Pride return to action on Tuesday, September 30, when it travels to take on Rhode Island College. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
