Wellesley Blanks Women's Soccer, 2-0

Springfield, Mass. – October 17, 2009 – The Wellesley women’s soccer team picked up a key 2-0 victory over Springfield College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. Megan Turchi’s goal late in the first half proved to be the game-winner for the Blue.

Springfield falls to 7-4-3, 2-2-2 in NEWMAC action while the Blue improve to 6-5-2 and 4-1-1 in league play.

Wellesley registered the only goal of the first half as it score with just 3:20 remaining on the clock. Turchi got free at the top of the box and let loose a shot that caromed off the right post and into the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Springfield put forth a relentless offensive attack in the second stanza, spending nearly the entire half in the Wellesley defensive third. However, despite being outshot 12-4 in the final 45 minutes, the Blue defense held tough, holding the hosts off the scoreboard. Springfield’s best chance came in the 82nd minute when Katrie Martore couldn’t corral a Gina Calabrese shot from 20 yards out. Amber Thornton ran onto the loose ball inside the six yard box, but Martore snuffed out the scoring chance.

Wellesley tacked on an insurance goal with 7:08 remaining in the game when Amanda Young finished a Chelsea Ann Patry feed to give the Blue its second goal of the game.

Martore finished with eight saves in goal to earn the shutout victory, while Katie Delude suffered the loss. She made four saves in the opening half. Hanna MacDougall played the second half in goal for Springfield and allowed a goal while facing four shots.
