Northampton, Mass. – October 27, 2009 – Sophomore forward Katie Mantie tallied four goals in the opening 27 minutes as the Springfield College women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 5-0 win at Smith College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
With the victory, Springfield improved to 10-4-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the conference while the Pioneers fell to 3-12-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the NEWMAC.
Springfield put its first goal of the game on the board in the fifth minute of play when junior Courtney Price crossed the ball into midfield to Mantie, who dribbled upfield for a one on one with Smith’s sophomore goalkeeper, Lindsey Gregor. Mantie made no mistake as she placed it into the left corner of the net for the eventual game winner.
Less than five minutes later, Mantie scored again after she received a pass from senior forward Caitlin Sawczuk. Mantie was also responsible for the Pride’s next two goals registered at the 22nd and 26th minute of play respectively.
The Pride closed out the first half with its fifth goal of the game as Amber Thornton record an unassisted strike in the 44th minute.
For the game, Springfield held a 10-3 advantage in the game. Hanna MacDougall needed to make just one save in goal as she earned the shutout victory. Gregor totaled three saves in 90 minutes for the Pioneers.
