Springfield, Mass. – September 5, 2009 – Maria Evans scored the game’s only goal with 12 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Springfield College women’s soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State in the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Pride improve to 2-0 on the season and have won each of their games in overtime thus far in 2009.
With time winding down and a tie seeming eminent, Jackie Moscardelli blasted a shot from 30 yards out towards the Warriors goal. Goalkeeper Kim Church deflected the ball away, however, it landed right in the the path of Evans. The senior made no mistake as she headed the ball into the back of the net from six yards out to give the hosts the victory.
Springfield’s best chance previously in the contest came with just over 20 minutes remaining when Brittany Collins was awarded a penalty kick. Church was up to the task and made a terrific save to keep the game scoreless for the time being.
Church finished the game with four saves between the pipes, while the Pride’s Hanna MacDougall finished with three saves in the contest.
Westfield State 4, Utica 0
In the consolation game, the Westfield State Owls defeated the Utica College Pioneers 4-0 Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Owls to 1-1 on the season, while the Pioneers dropped to 0-2.
Junior forward Jill Ranney struck first for Westfield with a goal in the 21st minute. Senior foward Meg Gearin led the OwlsÂ' attack with a pair of goals. Freshman midfielder Leann Rivard notched an unassisted goal in the 65th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Pieciak started in net for Westfield and recorded no saves. In net for Utica, senior Kindra Fiveash made two saves and was later relieved by junior Monique Schneeberger. Schneeberger made seven saves in the loss for the Pioneers.
