Women's Soccer Downs Babson, 2-0, In Key NEWMAC Meeting

Springfield, Mass. – October 23, 2010Brittany Collins and Ashley McFarlane each scored in the second half to lift the Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Babson in a critical New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

The win boosts SpringfieldÂ's record to 12-4, 7-1 in league action. Babson drops to 10-5-1, 5-2-1 in NEWMAC play. Springfield controls its own destiny as it looks to win the regular season conference title and serve as host for the NEWMAC Tournament. If Springfield is able to defeated Mount Holyoke next Friday evening, it will earn the top seed in the postseason conference tournament.

After a scoreless first half, the Pride finally broke through at the 60:40 mark off a set piece from midfield. Senior Courtney Price sent a free kick into the middle of the box, which was tightly congested with players from both teams. Collins ran onto the bouncing ball at the six yard box and headed it past Babson keeper Lisa Wojnar to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Springfield nearly scored the exact same way just over three minutes later, but this time, Collins’ header was punched away from danger by Wojnar.

McFarlane added an insurance goal with 1:42 left in regulation as she converted a breakaway attempt. Erica Donnelly slipped a pass through the Babson onside trap and found McFarlane all alone versus Wojnar. McFarlane slipped a shot from eight yards out inside the right post as Springfield snagged a two-goal lead.

For the contest, Springfield owned a 15-6 advantage in shots, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.

Erin Greenstein earned her eighth shutout of the season as she made just one save in the game. Wojnar totaled 10 saves in goal for the visitors.

Springfield plays its final regular season game on Friday evening when it hosts Mount Holyoke at 7:00 pm.
