Westfield, Mass. – April 30, 2010 – The Springfield College softball team closed out its regular season on Friday afternoon as it downed local-foe Westfield State, 4-1, in a non-conference contest. Michelle Wlosek had two of Springfield’s six hits, including what proved to be a RBI single in the third inning.
Springfield now stands at 23-18-1 and will now wait to see if it received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which will be announced on Monday, May 10th. Westfield State lost for just the ninth time this season and stands at 22-9.
Amanda Novak gave the Pride a 1-0 second-inning lead with her homer to straightaway centerfield. The Pride took a 2-0 third-inning lead as Chelsea Bender reached base after she was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Wlosek then drove in Springfield second run of the afternoon with a single to right-center field.
Westfield made in 2-1 with a fourth-inning run on Kristyn CarrollÂ's RBI single. However, Springfield added two insurance runs in its final at bat in the seventh on RBI singles by Kelly Blake and Bryn Worrilow. Springfield out-hit Westfield, 6-5. Westfield leadoff hitter Kerin DeGirolamo was 2 for 3 and Allison Allen doubled.
