Norton, Mass. – October 15, 2011 – Junior Courtney Letourneau scored the only goal of the match with 12:26 remaining in the second half to lift the Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wheaton College in New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
The win moves the Pride to 9-3-1 (5-0-1 NEWMAC), while the loss snaps the Lyons (11-2-2, 5-1-0 NEWMAC) six-game win streak and marks their first loss in 10 matches.
With the match still scoreless entering the late stages of the second half, Letourneau collected a loose ball and lofted a shot from 25 yards out towards the net. Wheaton senior goalkeeper Lindsay Leddy jumped to knock the shot down, but the ball struck her hands and deflected into the right side of the net, just inside the post.
The two schools played a very even first half which ended with the Pride holding a slim 7-6 edge in shots. Springfield possessed the best scoring opportunity for either side in the first half when senior Jackie Moscardelli drilled a shot from the top of the box that was batted away by Leddy. The rebound lay loose for a few seconds before the goalkeeper covered the ball.
Eight minutes into the second half, Springfield sophomore Ashley Carresi nearly broke the tie as she lofted a shot towards the far right post that just snuck over the net. Later, the Lyons were awarded a free kick a few yards outside the box towards the left side of the field, but senior Kaitlyn MawickeÂ's shot went over the net.
Junior Erin Greenstein made five saves to earn her ninth win of the season and seventh shutout for the Pride. Leddy recorded four saves and saw her record dip to 10-2-1. The Pride outshot the Lyons 10-4 in the second half and finished the match with a 16-11 edge.
The Pride will next entertain Clark at 7 pm on Tuesday evening.
