Springfield, Mass – October 22, 2011 – Sophomore Kelly Gallo provided the game’s only goal as she led the Springfield College field hockey team to a critical 1-0 win over rival Babson College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday morning at Stagg Field.
Springfield now stands at 4-12, 4-3 in NEWMAC play while the Beavers own a record of 8-10, 4-3.
After a scoreless first half, Gallo found the back of the cage at the 46:46 mark of the contest. Kayla Sokol started off the offensive surge as her initial bid was saved, only to have Gallo find the loose ball on a rebound and strike for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Pride’s other prime scoring chance came over two minutes into the second stanza, when it was was awarded a penalty corner. However, Babson goalkeeper Jess Pashos was up to the task as she completely laid out to her right to make a terrific save on Amy Dean’s attempt.
Babson’s Hannah Feneberg tallied a pair of shots on goal for the game, including rip five minutes into the contest that Grace Bibber was able to slap out of the air to keep the game scoreless.
Springfield held a 14-9 lead in shots, including a 9-4 edge in the decisive second half. Babson owned a 9-4 edge in penalty corners on the afternoon.
Pashos finished the game with nine saves, six of which came in the second half. Bibber stood tall behind a gritty Springfield defensive unit as she posted five saves for her second shutout win of the year.
The Pride will play its regular-season finale next Saturday as it hosts Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 pm.
