Field Hockey Handles Wheaton, 7-0

Springfield, Mass. – October 2, 2012Kelly Gallo scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Springfield College field hockey team to a commanding 7-0 victory over visiting Wheaton College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night.

Springfield evens its record to 5-5, but more importantly improves to 3-1 in league play. The Lyons drop to 2-8, 0-4 against league foes.

Outshooting the visitors 12-1 in the opening 35 minutes of play, the Pride came out very aggressive on the offensive side of the ball. Gallo struck first at 21:52 for what would prove to be the game-winner. Meg McHugh continued the offensive pressure and found the back of the cage less that four minutes later.

Gallo rattled home a goal with 4:14 left in the first half after blistering a shot into the back of the cage as the hosts headed into the half with a 3-0 cushion. McHugh delivered off a penalty corner 2:59 into the second half and the hosts used markers from Gallo, Hayden Riley, and Kayla Sokol to complete the 7-0 victory.

Springfield finished the game with a 21-4 edge in shots and a 10-8 cushion in penalty corners.

For the Lyons, Madison Wolters made seven saves in the loss. Timarie Villa need to make four stops to earn the shutout win.

The Pride will play a non-conference game on Thursday versus Castleton starting at 6:00 pm.
