Geneva, N.Y. — November 10, 2012 — —The Cortland womenÂ's soccer team scored in the 57th minute to secure a 1-0 victory over Springfield College in an NCAA Division III WomenÂ's Soccer Championship first round match played on Cozzens Field on the campus of William Smith College today. The Red Dragons improve to 12-4-5 overall, while the Pride finishes its season with a 13-5-2 record.
Cortland advances to the second round, where it will face No. 8 William Smith. The Herons and the Red Dragons will meet tomorrow, Nov. 11 on Cozzens Field at 1 p.m. William Smith topped Penn State Behrend 3-0 in the other first round match played in Geneva today.
After a scoreless and back-and-forth first half, the Red Dragons broke through at 56:09. First-year Jessica McFadden (Morganville, N.J.) sent a cross from the right side, finding sophomore Amanda Margolis (Oceanside, N.Y.) right out in front of the goal. She collected the pass and fired into the left side of the net to give Cortland the 1-0 advantage. It was MargolisÂ' fourth goal this season, and proved to be the only one the Red Dragons would need as they held off Springfield for the remainder of the contest.
The Pride had a few scoring chances late in the game. With 7:11 left in regulation, junior Vicky DiNatale (Weymouth, Mass.) lofted a free kick ahead to first-year Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) who was in the box. Fowler redirected it with a header that went just wide of the left post. With 1:16 remaining, first-year Krissy Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) fired a shot on goal, but CortlandÂ's goalie, sophomore Taylor Hudson (Victor, N.Y.), was there to make the stop. Hudson played all 90 minutes and finished with four saves.
Senior Erin Greenstein (Framingham, Mass.) stopped four shots in all 90 minutes for Springfield. The Pride held a 16-11 edge in total shots. Springfield took four corners while Cortland finished with three.
