Springfield, Mass. – September 19, 2012 – The Amherst College field hockey team used five goals in a 16-minute span in the first half as it defeated host Springfield College 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Amherst improve to 4-0 with the win, while Springfield evened its record at 3-3. The Lord Jeffs entered ranked 10th in the nation in this weekÂ's NFCA National Coaches Poll.
The Lord Jeffs controlled much of the game, owning a 26-5 edge in shots, including a 15-1 cushion in the first half. Amherst also took eight penalty corners to the Pride’s four.
Timarie Villa had a very strong showing in the cage, despite giving up seven goals. She finished with with 17 stops in the contest as the Lord Jeffs put 24 of their 26 shots on goal.
Both Madeline Tank and Alex Philie scored twice for the visitors, while Katie McMahon and Krista Zsitvay each had a goal and an assist. Ellie Anderson added the Lord Jeffs other marker on the afternoon and Rachel Tannenbaum needed to make four saves to earn the shutout win.
Philie opened up the scoring at 6:18 after driving a ball from eight yards out into the left corner of the cage. At the 10:06 mark, Tank cleaned up a rebound in front of the cage, flipping a shot over a sprawled out Villa. Just 4:26 later, Anderson stuffed home another rebound on the goal line for the visitors third goal. With 15:01 remaining, McMahon delivered a great inside look to Zsitvay for another Amherst marker, forcing Springfield into a timeout.
The Lord Jeffs scored their final goal of the first half at the 22:32 mark on a great individual effort by Tank. After having her initial bid saved by Villa, she layed out and poked home her second strike of the opening 35 minutes of play.
The visitors used another long drive by Philie at 46:44 and McMahon scored an unassisted marker in the 63rd minute for the final goal of the game after spinning through traffic in front.
Springfield will play its first road game of the season on Saturday when it travels to battle Smith in a conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
