Wheaton Clips Women's Soccer, 1-0, In NEWMAC Championship Rematch

Norton, Mass. – October 12, 2013 – In a rematch of last year’s conference championship game, the Wheaton College women’s soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Springfield College at Mirrione Stadium in New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. 

  With the win, Wheaton improves to 8-5-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play, while Springfield dips to 7-4-1 and 3-1-1 in the NEWMAC.

  The Lyons finished the match with 13 shots and one corner, while the Pride registered 14 shots and four corners. Springfield registered two of its 14 corners in the final two minutes of the contest, but WheatonÂ's defense denied both opportunities.

Neither team located the back of the net until Laila Razzaghi (Ringoes, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season at 74:44 to provide the hosts with the lead for good. The game’s only goal came in the 75th minute from the left side of the 18-yard line.   Wheaton junior Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla.) led the Blue and White with five shots, while Razzaghi and senior Kristina Braga (Lowell, Mass.) recorded two shots apiece.

  Springfield senior Ashley Carresi (Billerica, Mass.) led her squad with four shots, two of them coming on net.

  Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Wilson (Bellingham, Mass.) picked up her first win of the season with eight saves. Springfield junior goalkeeper Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finished with four stops.

  Both Springfield and Wheaton return to NEWMAC action on Tuesday, October 15 with the Lyons hosting Emerson College at 3:30 p.m. and the Pride entertaining Clark University at 7 p.m.
