Women's Soccer and Babson Battle to Scoreless Tie in Double Overtime

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – October 5, 2013 - The Springfield College women’s soccer team battled through regulation and two overtime periods, ending in a scoreless tie with Babson in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match up on Saturday afternoon.

Springfield is now 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the NEWMAC. Babson is 7-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.

Just a season ago, the Pride beat Babson in double overtime. Krissy Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the game-winner with 44 seconds left in the second overtime period. On Saturday, she almost did it again. With just one minute left in double overtime, Cicalis got the ball just outside of the six yard box. The Babson keeper came out to play the ball, but Cicalis chipped it over her head, towards the left side of the goal. The Babson defenders quickly got to the ball and cleared it, to end with a scoreless draw.

The Pride outshot Babson by a margin of 16-5. Springfield also took eight corner kicks, to Babson’s one.

Babson’s best chance of the day came with 20:08 left in the first half. Forward Jenny Moore had a breakaway opportunity, but her shot went well-wide.

Moore had another chance in the second overtime period. With 3:08 left in the game, she flew down the field on a breakaway, but her shot went directly into the arms of Springfield goalie Sarah Myers (Bridgewater, Mass.).

Myers finished with two saves in goal for Springfield. Melina Kapotsis had four saves in goal for Babson. Meaghan Merullo also played in goal for the Beavers.

Springfield will continue NEWMAC play, traveling to Smith for a 4:00 p.m. start on Tuesday. Babson will host Wellesley on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in a conference clash.
