Field Hockey Closes Regular Season With 4-1 Win Over WPI

Worcester, Mass – November 2, 2013 - Libby Hart (Chatham, Mass.) and Katie Gill (Wallingford, Conn.) each notched goals in the opening five minutes and MK Murray (Killingworth, Conn.) added two more later in the half to help Springfield defeat host WPI 4-1 in a NEWMAC field hockey contest played Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Springfield closes out the regular season with a 6-11 record and 4-4 conference record. The Pride won their final three NEWMAC contests to earn the fifth seed in next weekÂ's conference tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded Babson in a quarterfinal Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.. WPI closes out its 2013 campaign with a 6-11 mark and 1-7 record in NEWMAC play.

The Pride scored on two of their first three shots on net. Hart began the scoring when she knocked home a rebound at 3:36 for her fifth goal of the season. Springfield pushed the advantage to 2-0 just 4:59 into the contest when Gill collected her third goal of the year after burying home a pass by Tori Stollmer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).

Springfield then added onto its lead with a pair of Murray tallies midway through the first half. The senior back put back a rebound following a penalty corner at 18:14 before successfully converting a penalty stroke at 22:19. The goals were MurrayÂ's sixth and seventh of 2013.

WPI drew one back midway through the second half when Allison Buckley (Worcester, MA) picked up her first career goal after a long run towards goal at 55:17 The Engineers were credited with five of their seven shots on the day and attempted all four of its penalty corners in the second half.

Juliana Barrasso (Bayport, N.Y.) was credited with two saves on the day while picking up the win for Springfield, who outshot the Crimson and Gray 15-7 and held a 17-4 edge in corners. WPI goalkeepers Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) and Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) both made two saves while SarahRose Gabor (Cazenovia, NY) registered a pair of defensive saves and senior Kate Roosa (Cottekill, NY) added a defensive save a well.
