Women's Basketball Uses Complete Effort To Power By Mount Holyoke, 55-38

Springfield, Mass. – February 13, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s basketball team put together a complete effort to power past visiting Mount Holyoke, 55-38, on Wednesday evening Blake Arena.

With the win, the Pride snapped its six-game slide to improve to 4-19, 2-15 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Lyons fall to 5-17, 3-14.

Springfield had several strong performances, led by Heather Lewis, who tallied a game-high 16 points to go along with six boards. Classmate Emily Taylor added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench and Tamara Tribble continued her consistent play with eight points and 10 caroms.

For the visitors, both Angelica Pascual and Amber Legare registered 14 points in the loss. Legare hauled in a game-high 12 boards, while Kate Karraker posted six points and three steals.

Springfield benefited from its suffocating defense in the first 20 minutes of play, limiting the Lyons to just five field goals and 13 points. After Legare connected inside to make it a 14-13 game with 5:10 to go in the half, Springfield poured on a 10-0 run to close stanza en route to an 11-point halftime cushion. Jaimie Bickelhaupt was key in the spurt, chipping in five points.

Mount Holyoke battled back to get within nine following a pair from the charity stripe from Pascual to cut the lead to 32-23 with 11:43 left in regulation.

Over the next 9:05, Springfield held Mount Holyoke to just 10 points while pouring in 21 of their own to blow open the contest. Lewis and Taylor simply took over the game, combining for 17 of the Pride’s points in the run.

As a team, the Pride score 18 points of Mount Holyoke’s 16 turnovers and held a 45-35 edge on the glass. Springfield finished the second half shooting 50% (10-for-20) to boost its overall shooting percentage for the game to 37.3%. The Lyons hit just 26% of their shots (13-for-50).

Springfield will wrap up its season on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked Babson at 1:00 pm.
