New London, Conn.- September 21, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s soccer team edged NEWMAC rival Coast Guard, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Coast Guard Track Complex.
With the victory, Springfield improves to 4-2-0 (1-0-0 NEWMAC) on the season while Coast Guard falls to 3-5-0 (0-1-0 NEWMAC).
Springfield got on the board first when sophomore Mariah Ferrara (North Adams, Mass.) was able to beat junior keeper Holly Moore after taking a pass from senior Ashley Carresi (Billerica, Mass.) on the wing just under two minutes into the match.
Coast Guard, battling throughout, knotted the game at 1-all in the 24th minute when junior Julia MundyÂ's shot from distance made it past the Springfield goal keeper.
Following the half-time break, the Pride came out firing once again, as senior Brittany Samson (Chicopee, Mass.) took a cross from fellow senior Kim Rasmussen (East Berlin, Conn.) and put it into the net, off the bottom of the crossbar for the 2-1 lead.
Springfield held the edge in most every category for the math, despite the Bears playing them tough. In the end the Pride outshot Coast Guard 19-8 but the Bears held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Moore made eight saves for the Bears while and junior Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had three saves for Springfield.
Springfield will play again on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Roger Williams.
