Field Hockey Bested By 14th-Ranked Amherst, 8-2

Amherst, Mass. – September 24, 2013 - The Springfield College field hockey team scored just six minutes into the game, but host Amherst College ran away with an 8-2 win on Tuesday. Amherst was ranked 14th in the country according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association this week.

Springfield's Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) gave the Pride a 1-0 lead just 6:04 into the game. After a shot from the left side of the net was saved by the Amherst goalie, Gallo gained control with a scrum in the middle and put the ball into the back of the net for the game's first goal.

Amherst would go on to score five unanswered goals before the first half ended. Madeline Tank had a four-point game, scoring twice in each half. Kerry Fusco, Ellie Andersen, Sara Culhane and Katie Paolano each scored once for host Amherst.

Springfield tallied a second-half goal by MK Murray (Killingworth, Conn.) at 59:45.

Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) and Juliana Barrasso (Bayport, N.Y.) combined for 13 saves in goal for Springfield. Amherst's Rachel Tannenbaum and Emily Horwitz combined for four.

The Pride fall to 1-5 with the loss while Amherst climbs above .500 at 3-2.

Springfield will play its second NEWMAC game of the season on Saturday. The Pride will travel to Babson for a 4:00 p.m. start.
