Cambridge, Mass. – September 28, 2013 - The Springfield College women’s soccer team knocked off its second-regionally ranked team of the week as it blaked rival MIT on Saturday, 1-0. The Engineers were ranked 13th in the country this week and No. 1 in New England.
Springfield scored the game’s lone goal in the 18th minute. Lauren Muser (Derry, N.H.) made a pass to Krissy Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) who buried it into the left corner as the MIT goalie came out to play the ball. It was the first goal of the season for Cicalis.
The Springfield defense held on for the rest of the game to shut out MIT. The Pride improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC with the conference win. Springfield has won three-straight. MIT drops to 5-2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned the shutout win for Springfield, making 7 saves. MIT and Springfield each had 14 shots in the game, but the Pride had the edge in shots on goal, 10-7. MIT’s Lauren Ulmann and Tamar Weseley combined for nine saves.
The Pride will travel to Williams on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. start.
