Second-Half Rally Stifles Women's Basketball, Falling to Western New England 68-63

Springfield, Mass. - November 18, 2014 - Despite a pair of 14-point performances from sophomore guard Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) and freshman forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) the Springfield College women's basketball team fell to cross-town rival Western New England University 68-63 on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the Pride fall to 0-1 on the year, while the Golden Bears pick up their first win of the season and settle even at 1-1 overall.

Senior forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) kicked off her senior season with a double-double, picking up 11 points and 10 rebounds in her game of the year. Sophomore guard Dina Pitsas (Milford, N.H.) played a major role defensively for the Pride, picking up eight rebounds in the contest.

After back-to-back three-pointers from Windwer to give the Pride a 10-3 lead, the Pride raced out to a 32-16 lead amidst a 12-5 run, capped off by a pair of free-throws from the guard.

After a 5-0 run from Western New England to cut the Pride's lead to 14, the Pride closed out the first half with a lay-up from sophomore center Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) to end the opening stanza at 41-25, Springfield.

The Pride kicked off the second half on a 10-4 run, capped by a lay-in from Pitsas in transition, forcing a Western New England time-out.

An 23-2 run late in the second half for Western New England cut the Pride's lead to just one, before Bickelhaupt knocked down a free-throw to make the score 54-52, Springfield. with 3:30 remaining in the contest.

Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.) hit a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to give the Golden Bears a 55-54 lead, Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) picked up a rebound and put back a lay-up to give Western New England a 57-54 with 2:43 left. After Anderson converted on her free-throw to make it 58-54, the sophomore came back with another lay-up on the next Golden Bear possession to make it 60-54 with 1:41 left.

After a lay-up from King, senior guard Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.) came up with a steal and converted a lay-up on the other end to cut the Golden Bear's lead to just four with 49 seconds remaining.

Springfield could not muster the comeback as the Golden Bears escaped with the five-point victory.

The Pride will be back in action this weekend as it will open its home schedule and host New York University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Blake Arena
