Springfield, Mass. - November 8, 2014 - The Springfield College football lost its final home game of the season as it was bested by visiting RPI, 37-13, in Liberty League play at Stagg Field on Saturday.

With the loss, Springfield drops to 5-4, 3-3 in league play, while the Engineers snapped a three-game slide to improve to 5-4, 3-3.

RPI owned a 427-279 edge in total offense, while the Engineer defense limited the Pride to just 229 yards on the ground.  Springfield entered the game with the nation's second-ranked ground attack, averaging over 353 yards per contest.

Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) led Springfield with 76 yards rushing yards.  Drew Brown (Providence, R.I.) caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Marrero, while Shane Ireland (Waterbury, Conn.) was the recepient of a 17-yard touchdown strike from Tim O'Brien (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) in the waning seconds of the game. Defensively, Max Ford (Bloomfield, Conn.) was credited with a game-high 10 tackles, while both Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Brian Kelly (Closter, N.J.) made nine stops. 

For RPI, Nick Schaltz ran for team-best 76 yards, Austin Amery found the end zone twice on the ground, and Tommy Morgan was 10-for-19 for 116 yards and two scores   Nick Borkowski was eight saves for the Engineers and returned a fumble for a score, while Phillip Lanieri III had five stops an an interception.

RPI owned a 33:27-26:33 edge and had three takeaways, including a defensive score.  Springfield was 4-for-16 on third down conversions for the day.

The Engineers put the first points of the day on the board just 3:50 into the game after Andrew Franks connected from 52 yards out.  The field goal was the longest field goal ever at Stagg Field, as John Welling previously hit a 51 yarder in 1985 in 33-3 win over Lowell.

RPI added to its lead with a defensive touchdown as Borkowski scooped up a Marrero fumble and found pay dirt from 21 yards out just 52 seconds into the second quarter.  Nacewicz blocked the extra point, to make it a 9-0 game.

With 3:15 left in the half, Joey Giacone elevated to snag a five-yard touchdown pass from Morgan, capping off a six-play, 63-yard drive to push the visitors lead to 16-0.

The Engineers scored the only touchdown on the third quarter after Morgan found Matt Lane from five yards out to make it a 23-0 contest. 

Emery punched in a five-yard score 20 seconds into the fourth quarter before the Pride finally broke through with 7:55 on the clock after Marrero connected with Brown out of the backfield for a 15 strike.  The Engineers would score their final touchdown of the afternoon on another score from Emery, this time from a yard out, to make it a 37-7 game. 

Springfield closed out the scoring in the waning moments of the game as Ireland snagged a 17-yard score from O'Brien.

The Pride will wrap up its regular season next Saturday when it travels to take on in-state foe WPI at 12:00 pm.
