Football Runs Over Rochester, 63-27, In Liberty League Opener

Springfield, Mass. - September 27, 2014 - The Springfield College football team totaled 636 yards of total offense, including 532 yards on the ground, as it cruised past the University of Rochester,  63-27, in Liberty League action on Stagg Field Saturday afternoon.

Springfield has now won three-straight games to improve to 3-1, 1-0 in league play.  Rochester suffers its first setback of the year, dropping to 2-1, 0-1.

The Pride put together its most dominating effort of the season as it totaled 30 first downs and averaged nearly eight yards per carry.  Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) led Springfield with 190 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while Keith Rodman (Northvale, N.J.) totaled 164 yards, averaging 10.9 yards per carry, while scoring three times.  Stephen Speidel (Sussex, N.J.) added 82 yards and two first-half scores.

Defensively, both Kashden Naraine (Windsor, Conn.) and Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) totaled eight tackles and combined for three tackles-for-loss. 

Rochester, which finished the day with 280 yards of offense, including 218 through the air, was Jordan Golinowski (Morganville, N.J.) went 16-for-25 with 174 yards and three scores.  Farid Adenuga (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hauled in three passes for 92 yards and two scores, and Thomas Marone (Manorville, N.Y.) led all players with 10 tackles.

The Pride opened up the scoring as Marrero capped off a 17-play, 83-yard drive that lasted over six minutes as he rushed in from six yards out to give Springfield a 6-0 lead with 4:10 left in the first. 

Springfield's offense exploded in the second quarter, as it rushed for 254 yards on just 16 carries, pouring on 36 points. Speidel punched in a three-yard score just 1:08 into the quarter before Marrero found daylight and scampered in from 64 yards 2:47 later. 

The offense continue to roll as Rodman rumbled in from 53 yards out at the 7:26 mark and the junior fullback added a three-yard score 3:12 later as the Pride opened up a 35-0 cushion.  With 29 seconds remaining in the half, Speidel found room on the left edge and lumbered in from 22 yards to give Springfield a 42-0 edge at the half.

The Yellowjackets made things interesting to start the second half, registering 21 unanswered points in the first 7:32 to cut Springfield's lead in half. Max Berger got things started with a five-yard touchdown catch from Golinowski just 2:04 in the half.  After a three-and-out by the Pride, Golinowski connected with Adenuga for a 57-yard score up the left sideline at the 9:50 mark. 

Springfield's offense went three-and-out again, and after Rochester blocked the ensuing punt, Golinowski found Adenuga across the middle for a nine-yard touchdown with 7:28 to play, making it a 42-21 ball game.

The Pride would then settle down, putting together a seven-play, 78 yard drive which was capped off by a one-yard touchdown plunge by Rodman.  Springfield tacked on another score with just 31 seconds left in the quarter as Marrero found Blake Joppy (Clarksburg, Md.) up the right sideline for a 21-yard strike. 

Springfield's Chris Young (Rocky Hill, Conn.) scored his first collegiate touchdown with 3:06 remaining and Luke Szumski closed out the scoring with a two-yard touchdown catch from Daniel Bronson with 10 seconds in the game.

The Pride will play three of its next four games on the road, beginning with a showdown at Union next Saturday at 12:00 pm.
