Women's Basketball Suffers First Conference Setback to Wheaton, 64-53

Box Score

Norton, Mass. - January 10, 2015 - Despite senior forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) posting her sixth double-double of the season, the Springfield College women's basketball team suffered a 64-53 loss to Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon in Emerson Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Pride's six-game win streak comes to a halt, falling to 8-5 overall on the season and 4-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the win, Wheaton improves to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

After Bickelhaupt's 20 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore guard Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) connected on four three-pointers, finishing the contest with 14 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.) posted a team-high six assists. The Pride shot 18-for-60 (30%) on the day, while the Lyons were 18-for-56 (32.1%) from the field.

The Pride opened up the game with back-to-back three-pointers from Bickelhaupt and Windwer to give Springfield an early 6-0 lead, but a 10-0 run from the Lyons, capped off by a three-pointer from Laura Pierce (Hampstead, N.H.), quickly squandered the Pride's lead.

The Lyons would go on to take a seven-point lead midway through the opening half when Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer at the 9:46 mark to make it 19-12, Wheaton. From there Springfield went on a 7-2 run to bring itself back to within two points after Dina Pitsas (Milford, N.H.) banked home a deep three-point attempt with 5:20 left in the half.

The two sides would battle neck-and-neck for the remainder of the period, as the Lyons took a 32-26 lead into the break. Just 11 seconds into the second half, Windwer cashed in on a three-pointer to cut the Pride's deficit to three, and then evened the score at 34 apiece with another triple with 15:20 left in the contest.

After Kenzie Kuhn hit a jumper at the 12:43 mark to make it 41-36, Lyons, the Pride would score five unanswered including a lay-up from Riley Fake (Brockport, N.Y.) to even the game, before a triple from Shoemaker with 8:10 left gave the Lyons back its lead.

The Pride could not slow down Shoemaker, as the senior would go on to score 13 of the Lyons' next 15 points, sealing the victory for Wheaton.

Springfield will return to action on Tuesday, January 13 when it will host Clark at 7 p.m.
