Box Score Worcester, Mass. - October 31, 2015 - The Springfield College field hockey team picked up its fifth-straight victory on Saturday as it toppled WPI by a 4-1 decision in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.
With the win, Springfield earnd the sixth seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship and the Pride will travel to play third-seeded Smith on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The Pride improved to 10-8 overall, including a 4-4 ledger in conference action and are riding a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2010. The Engineers, meanwhile, wrap up their campaign with a 6-10 record.
All five goals were a result of penalty corners. Sophomore Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) netted her team-leading 13th tally of the year off an assist by senior Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.). Libby Hart (Chatham, Mass.) deposited what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 27:35 and Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) gave the Pride a 3-0 advantage at the break with a 34th minute marker. With 4:22 remaining, Sweet and Kennedy teamed up to make it a 4-1 final. Pride senior goalkeeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) halted three shots in the victory.
In the Engineers final game of the year, Stephanie Symecko (Bondville, Vt.) scored her lone goal of the season, with help from Shannon Rice (Bath, Maine) to halt the shutout in the 51st minute.
Springfield owned a 16-8 advantage in shots and took 17 of the game's 23 penalty corners.
