Football Runs Over UMass Dartmouth, 35-17, In Home Opener

Springfield, Mass. - September 11, 2015 - The Springfield College football team racked up 451 yards on the ground as it bested UMass Dartmouth, 35-17, in front of 2,300 fans at Stagg Field on Friday evening in non-conference play.

The win evens Springfield's record to 1-1 on the year, while the Corsairs drop to to 1-1.

The Pride totaled 458 yards of total offense, averaing 7.8 yards per play, as it had three players rush over the century mark in the win.

Senior quarterback Tim O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) totaled 114 yards and a score on just eight carries, while Keith Rodman (Northvale, N.J.) totaled 104 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.  Jake Eglintine (Gansevoort, N.Y.) played substantial time for the first time in his career under center, rushing for an even 100 yards.   Senior Drew Brown (Barrington, R.I.) added 61 yards and two second-half scores and Jordan Wilcox (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) chipped in 44 yards and a score.

Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) led all players with 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, while Brian Kelly (Closter, N.J.) totaled eight stops.

For UMass Dartmouth, Cory Burnham went 14-for-32 for 160 yards and two scores and Stephen Roy (Northboro, Mass.) carried the ball 13 times for 117 yards.  Brandon Miller (Holden, Mass.) made nine stops, while Alex Ortega (Lynn, Mass.) added eight tackles.  The visitors totaled 357 yards of total offense, including 197 on the ground.

Springfield opened the night's scoring on the Pride's first possession, as O'Brien busted through the left side of the line for a 65-yard touchdown run to give the Pride an early 7-0 advantage over the Corsairs just 2:15 in the game.

Beginning the second quarter, Springfield completed a 14-play, 67-yard drive lasting 7:28 when O'Brien handed the ball to Wilcox, who crossed the goal line to give the Pride a 14-0 lead over UMass Dartmouth.

The Corsairs would respond after a 56-yard kick return from Roy set up an 7-yard touchdown pass from Stokes to Brendan Dagle (Northboro, Mass.), who caught the pass and dragged his feet in the back-right corner of the end zone to cut UMass-Dartmouth's deficit in half at the 13:40 mark.

UMass Dartmouth would make it a four-point game with 7:09 remaining in the first half, as Steve Trask (Billerica, Mass.) converted a 30-yard field goal after a 10-play, 56-yard field goal to make it 14-10, Pride.

Starting its drive on the 3-yard line, a 61-yard rush from Eglintine gave Springfield a chance to extend its lead midway through the third quarter.  The sophomore would eventually pitch the ball to Brown, who found the right side of the endzone to cap off the Pride's 7-play, 97 yard drive to give the hosts a 21-10 lead with 6:55 left in the third quarter.

Just 2:19 later, UMass Dartmouth would answer, as Burham rolled out to his right, only to find John Beardsley (Essex, Mass.) on a crossing route to bring it back to a four-point game, as the Pride were still up 21-17 with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

Just 51 seconds into the fourth quarter, Brown would score his second touchdown of the half from 6-yards out, after snagging an Eglintine pitch and barreling down the right sideline and into the endzone to give the Pride a 28-17 lead.

Springfield would take a 35-17 lead over the Corsairs after Rodman took a hand-off, broke a few arm tackles and rumbled into the end zone from 56-yards out with 6:16 remaining in the contest.

Springfield will play again next Saturday when it travels to play Mount Ida at 1:00 pm.
