Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 19, 2015 - Despite holding a 19-5 shot advantage throughout the course of the game, the Springfield College field hockey program suffered a 1-0 loss to the MIT Engineers on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field. With the loss, the Pride fall to 4-2 overall on the season, and 0-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, while the Engineers improve to 4-2 on the season, and 1-0 in league play.
Of the Pride's 19 shots, 11 of them came in the second half, but MIT goalkeeper Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) made 10 stops on the afternoon in the victory. As for Springfield, senior Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) finished the contest with one stop. The Pride also held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.
MIT struck midway through the opening half, when freshman forward Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) took a pass from senior Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) and cut to the middle of the field, before finding the back of the net to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead with 20:21 remaining in the first.
With 2:42 left in the opening stanza, midfielder Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) had a chance to help the Pride pull even, as she was awarded a penalty stroke, but the senior lifted a shot that would hit the crossbar, holding the Springfield offense at bay.
The Pride kept putting on the pressure in the waning minutes of the contest, but Kyritsis and the stout Engineers defense was able to hold off Springfield, and seal the victory.
