Box Score Amherst, Mass. - September 22, 2015 - Despite scoring the first goal of the contest, the Springfield College field hockey team suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 15 Amherst College on Tuesday evening. With the loss, Springfield is now 4-3 on the season, while the Lord Jeffs improve to 3-2 overall.
Senior Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) and Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) split time in the cage for the Pride, as Villa finished with nine stops, while Drake posted 12 stops in her first action at the collegiate level. For Amherst, Emily Horowitz (Wilmington, Del.) made nine saves in the win. Amherst out shot Springfield, 33-13, and had seven penalty corners to the Pride's four.
Sophomore Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) gave Springfield the first goal of the contest, as she found the back of the net after receiving a pass from senior forward Katie Gill (Wallingford, Conn.) to put Springfield up, 1-0, just 7:45 into the contest.
Following Kennedy's strike, the Lord Jeffs pulled even with a goal from Annika Nygren (Sudbury, Mass.), before Caroline Fiore (Essex Falls, N.J.) and Mary-Grace Cronin (Arlington, Mass.) pumped in back-to-back goals just 1:07 apart to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The Lord Jeffs continued to pour on the offense in the second half, as Sara Culhane (Princeton, N.J.) put Amherst up three, before Cronin and Nygren each tallied their second marker of the contest to seal the 6-1 victory for the hosts.
Up next, Springfield will travel to Babson College on Saturday, Sept. 26 for a 12 p.m. NEWMAC tilt.
