Box Score South Hadley, Mass. - February 17, 2016 - Eleven out of 14 student-athletes entered the scoring column as the Springfield College women's basketball team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 71-30, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday night at Howard Gymnasium.
The Pride, which improved to 15-9 overall and 9-6 in NEWMAC play, while the Lyons fall to 0-23, 0-15. Springfield shot 28-for-67 (48.1%) on the evening, including 5-of-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc, and the Lyons were 10-for-42 (23.8%) from the floor in the loss. The Pride also held a held a 48-30 advantage over Mount Holyoke on the glass, while also posting 38 points in the paint, to the Lyons' eight.
Senior forward Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) was the high scorer for Springfield, registering 12 points, while junior guard Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) notched 11 points, including three three-pointers. Freshman Gracie Restituyo (Jersey City, N.J.) totaled nine points and a career-best 11 rebounds in the win.
For Mount Holyoke, senior guard Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn.) produced the only double double of the contest, as she registered a game-high 13 points and collected 10 rebounds in the loss.
Springfield jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage when senior guard Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) converted a jump shot with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter, before the Pride extended its advantage to nine following a basket from Gins with 1:28 left in the period. The Lyons would answer with a lay-up, forcing a score of 15-8, Springfield, at the end of one.
Following a lay-up from sophomore guard Carli Brent (Wilmington, Mass.) to make it 22-10 with 4:09 left in the half, Springfield would end the half on a 7-2 run, capped by a lay-up from Gins to make it 27-12 at the break.
Springfield heated up in the second half, as Windwer pulled down a defensive rebound after a missed three from Green, before getting the ball back on a nice dish from Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) and drilling a triple to make it 38-12, Springfield, with 7:12 left in the third.
Following a pair of free-throws from Christa Brent (Wilmington, Mass.), sophomore guard Georgia Ford (Scarborough, Maine) converted a three-pointer of her own to make it 45-17 with 3:16 left in the frame. After getting fouled on an offensive board, Restituyo converted a free-throw opportunity to make it 49-21 at the end of three.
The Pride continued to pour it on in the fourth, as a pair of lay-ups from Adamopoulos and a jumper from Sam Spadaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) sealed the victory for Springfield.
Up next, Springfield will return to Blake Arena on Saturday, February 20 when it will host Wellesley in its NEWMAC regular-season finale at 12 p.m.
