Women's Volleyball Concludes Season With 3-1 Loss At Emerson

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - November 2, 2019 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team concluded the 2019 campaign with a four-set loss at Emerson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon. The Pride was defeated by the scores of 26-24, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22.

Springfield's season came to a close with a 16-12 record, including 3-7 mark in conference play.  Emerson improved to 18-7, 6-4.

In her final collegiate match Katie vonKampen (South Setauket, N.Y.) totaled 12 kills, while first-year Julia O'Connor (Rocky Hill, Conn.) added 12 kills and seven blocks in the middle.  Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.) contributed 11 kills, eight blocks, and eight digs in her return to the lineup, and Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) handed out 37 assists.  Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) had 14 digs in the setback.

Despite trailing 18-14 in the first, Springfield rallied to knot things up at 22 on a kill from Walsh.  After the hosts scored the next two points to gain set point, Springfield responded by tying things up again at 24 on another kill from Walsh, only to have back-to-back hitting errors give the Lions the 26-24 win.

With Lillian Traum (Fairfield, Conn.) at the service line, Springfield rattled off seven-straight points early in the second set to seize an 11-7 advantage. After extending its lead to 15-10, Springfield would find itself tied up at 23-all, but benefit from kills by Demi Spanos (West Harrison, N.Y.) and Walsh to even the match up at a set apiece.

Emerson used a 14-4 surge to take command of the third set with a 19-10 lead, and despite a late five-point run by Springfield, the hosts would hang on for the 25-16 win.

In the fourth, Springfield owned a 20-16 cushion off a kill by vonKampen, but Emerson poured on a 6-1 burst to gain a 21-20 edge.  Walsh and O'Connor responded for the Pride with a huge stuff block to even the set up, but the Lions put away three kills down the stretch to complete the victory.
