Women's Basketball Downs Smith College, 72-53

Northampton, Mass. - February 5, 2020 - The Springfield College women's basketball program took a 72-53 road victory over Smith College on Wednesday night at Ainsworth Gymnasium in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. 

Springfield improves to 15-6 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in the NEWMAC. Smith was handed their first home loss of the season and sits at 17-4 on the season with a 3-3 record in the conference. 

Springfield was led by a strong effort from Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.), who finished with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds. Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) finished with 20 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds and ran the offense effectively. Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) and Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) each poured in 12 points in the victory. Springfield shot a tremendous 55.4% from the field on 31-of-56 shooting. 

Smith College earned 12 points and five rebounds from Jessica Ruffner while Amelia Clairmont scored 11 points in the setback. 

Springfield jumped out to a 13-8 advantage over the Pioneers as Hall coralled an offensive rebound and put back the miss in traffic with 4:14 remaining in the quarter. Back-to-back buckets from Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.) and Goslin gave Springfield the 17-9 lead with 2:25 remaining. Ruffner finished a tough bucket for the Pioneers, at 2:11, to cut into the 17-11 deficit. With 1:57 remaining, Jacques pulled up on the wing pushing the score to 19-11 for Springfield. With 30 seconds remaining, Smith would look to finish out the quarter with a basket, but Hourihan would slide into help and reject the shot attempt. 

In the beginning second quarter, the Pride ripped off an 11-0 run to inflate the lead to 30-12, with Hourihan accounting for seven of the 11 points on the run. Smith would force back-to-back turnovers and turn them into quick offense to make the score 32-18 with 4:33 remaining in the quarter. At the 2:49 mark, Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.) would get in the lane and finish a floater off the glass to give the Pride a 37-19 lead, while Smith would respond with a three-pointer from Ruffner to make the gap 37-24 with 1:24 remaining in the half. With 50 seconds remaining, Goslin would rip Clairmont and get ahead on the break to let the Pride enter the half with a 39-24 lead. 

To start of the third quarter, Springfield rattled off a 12-4 run spanning over six minutes with Goslin capping off the run with another finish in the lane making the advantage 51-28 for the Pride. With 2:27 remaining in the quarter, Goslin connected with Hall for the finish pushing the lead to 23 at 53-30. A triple from Clairmont with 35 ticks remaining in the quarter would trim the Pride's lead to 53-38, capping off an 8-0 run for the Pioneers to end the quarter. 

At the 2:39 mark in the fourth quarter, Hourihan would get the friendly roll on a wing three to inflate the score to 66-44 for Springfield. Smith would respond with a pair of threes, but the Pride's controlled the rest of the way allowing for the 72-53 road victory.  

Springfield will shift focus to a home match up with WPI next Wednesday at 7 pm.
