Springfield, Mass. - October 7, 2022 - The Springfield College men's tennis team produced a 9-0 victory over crosstown-foe Western New England at Appleton Courts on Friday.
The No. 1 doubles team of Mike Kendrick (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) and the No. 3 squad of James Foley (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, México) each won by 8-1 margins, while Sichen Ni (Hefei, Anhui, China) and Mateusz Czajka (Linkoping, Sweden) earned an 8-2 win.
The Pride then cruised in singles play, winning all six matches to complete the 9-0 sweep. Kendrick and Eric Nicander (Stockholm, Sweden) each won by scores of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while Jiahe Ye (Beijing, China) turned in a 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. Czajka added a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5, Thongbooncharoen prevailed 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2, and Villaneuva Abad added a 6-3, 6-1 win for the hosts.
Springfield will play again on Tuesday and hosts Colby Sawyer at 3 pm.
