Box Score Springfield, Mass. - November 1, 2022- The Springfield College women's volleyball team delivered a three-set victory over Coast Guard in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday night. The Pride won by the scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-21.
Springfield advances to the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals which will take place on Saturday on the campus of MIT, and the third-seeded Pride will take on second-seeded Babson. Springfield is now 18-8 on the year, while the Bears season comes to a close with an 18-8 record.
Riley Donahue (South Windsor, Conn.) was sensational in the victory as she erupted for 16 kills at a .417 clip to go along with 10 digs, and four aces. The Pride was plus-19 in the kill column in the win as Megan Kirtyan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) directed the offense to a .301 hitting percentage and handed out 34 assists. Ally Townsend (Hummelstown, Pa.) was credited with a match-high 13 digs, while both Maeve Voltz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Jamie Albrecht (Selden, N.Y.) each contributed seven kills.
Noelle Tursky posted nine assists and seven kills, Allie Wildsmith totaled six kills and five blocks, and Maeve Duffin produced nine digs and 12 assists as the Bears hit .081 in the setback.
Donahue ripped a kill off the Coast Guard block in transition as the visitors called for a timeout at 11-7 in the first set. Springfield would stretch its lead to 15-10 on Donahue's third ace of the set, only to have the Bears respond with a 4-1 push to force Springfield into its first timeout of the night. Springfield would respond with a 5-1 push of its own, as Voltz put an overpass away at 21-15. A kill from Olivia Gentry (Loveland, Ohio) in transition would set a 25-21 win as Springfield hit at a .350 clip, with Voltz and Donahue each tallying four kills.
A kill out of the backrow from from Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) allowed the Pride to take a 9-7 edge and Townsend's serve would clip the tape for at 14-10 as the Bears called for a timeout. After the Bears battled back to 16-13, Springfield regained a 19-13 cushion on another overpass kill from Voltz and the hosts would cruise to a 25-17 victory. Donahue was especially impressive in the second, notching eight kills on nine swings to pace the Pride's offense that totaled 18 kills at a .371 hitting percentage in the stanza.
Voltz and Kirtyan would commit for a block on Coast Guard's transition attempt to make it 14-12 in favor of the Pride, only to have the visitors put together a 7-2 surge to open up a 19-16 lead. Out of a timeout, Springfield would settle down, getting kills from Donahue and Albrecht to kickstart a match-ending 9-2 burst for the 25-21 win. Billet came up with a pair of key kills down the strectch before consecutive hitting errors by the Bears completed the sweep.
