Women's Volleyball Shuts Down Trinity, 3-0

Springfield, Mass. - September 23, 2022- The Springfield College women's volleyball team picked up a straight-set victory in a non-conference meeting with Trinity in Blake Arena on Friday night.  The Pride won by the scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-22. 

Springfield, which was once again receiving votes in the AVCA Division III National Poll, improved to 8-2 while the Bantams slipped to 3-5. 

Riley Donahue (South Windsor, Conn.) led all players with 13 kills, Ally Townsend (Hummelstown, Pa.) was credited with a match-best 16 digs, and Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) chipped in 11 digs, seven kills, three blocks, and two aces. Megan Kirtyan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) turned in 29 assists in directing the offense and Maeve Voltz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was impressive in the middle, producing six kills on 11 errorless attempts and a a match-high five blocks. 

Donanhue put a ball away in transition for an early 6-3 lead before Billet and Olivia Gentry (Loveland, Ohio) committed on the pin for a huge block at 10-5 as the visitors called for a timeout.  The Bantams would pull within 13-12 following back-to-back miscues by the Pride, but Springfield would use a 7-3 surge to gain a 20-15 edge after a Bantam attack error.  Jamie Albrecht (Selden, N.Y.) would use the block for the 25-19 win as the Pride turned in 14 kills in the frame and held the Bantams to a -.080 hitting percentage.

Trailing 13-12 in the second, Springfield rattled off four points in a row, with Gentry scoring in transition as Trinity called for a timeout.  Clinging to a 20-19 lead, Springfield came out of a timeout and used a big swing down the line from Albrecht to seize momentum as they closed out the stanza on a 5-2 push, as Donahue muscled her sixth kill of the set through the block at for the 25-21 win.  

Trinity held an 11-9 lead in the early going of the third, but Billet put away three kills in an 8-3 surge as the Pride regained a 17-14 lead.  Consecutive aces from Kirtyan pushed the lead to 23-18, and Albrect hammered home the match-sealing kill at 25-22.

Springfield is back in Blake Arena on Saturday when it hosts Emerson at 1 pm.
