Men's Basketball Comes Up Short At Clark

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. - January 21, 2023 - Afer winning its last two conference outings, the Springfield College men's basketball team was downed by host Clark, 80-62, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday.

Clark is now 10-7, 2-4 against conference opponents, while Springfield falls to 5-12, 2-4 as well.

Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) scored a team-high 17 points, Nick Bray (Hartford, Conn.) added 14 points off the bench, and Panayiotis Kapanides (New Bedford, Mass.) added 11 points.  Springfield finished 24-for-67 (35%) from the field in the game, including 6-of-26 from deep, while 15 of Clark's 27 made field goals on the day were from beyond the arc.  Four different players from Clark scored in double figures, with Isaiah Taylor netting a game-high 22 points.

In a defensive-minded first half, Clark earned a 15-8 lead at the 11:50 mark on a three- pointer from Joel Artega, a Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) putback dunk would kickstart a 10-0 burst as Bray drilled a triple at 6:43 to put the Pride on top, 18-15.  Over the next three minutes, Clark would manufacture an 11-0 surge to take control at 26-18 and would head into the half with a 37-24 advantage.

Taylor canned a triple inside the first three minutes of the second half to make it a 45-29 contest, only to have Springfield respond with a 12-2 push as Costa knocked down a jumper in transition to pull the Pride within six at 47-41 with 13:33 left in regulation. However, Clark's deep shooting in the second half would prove to be too much, as they regained a double-digit lead two minutes later.  The hosts would knock down nine three-pointers in the half as lead by as many as 20 points en route to the conference win.

Springfield will next home Emerson on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
