No. 13 WPI Outlasts Men's Basketball

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - January 28, 2023 - The Springfield College men's basketball team was bested by nationally-ranked WPI, 83-58, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday.

Ranked 13th in latest D3hoops.com National Poll, WPI is 16-2 on the season and remains perfect in conference play with an 8-0 record.  The loss drops Springfield to 5-14, 2-6.

Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) netted a team-best 16 points, all of which came in the first half, as he was lone member of the Pride to score in double figures on the afternoon.  Andrew Rocci (Plymouth, Mass.) added a team-best nine rebounds and seven points off the bench.

WPI held a 40-20 scoring advantage in the past as John Adams was dominant with a 27-point, 12-rebound performance for the Engineers.  Donovan Sevilla registered 13 points and John Lowther produced 12 points and eight rebounds for a WPI squad that shot 30-for-67 (45%) from the field on the day.

It was a back-and-forth start to the game and Costa drilled a pull up three-pointer at the 14:12 mark to even things up at 9-9. WPI responded with a 10-0 run over the next five-plus minutes as a Sevilla layup gave the visitors a 19-9 edge with 8:54 remaining in the half.   WPI's lead would grow to 36-23 with just over a minute left remaining, only to have Nick Bray (Hartford, Conn.) leak out in transition in waning seconds and drill a three at the horn over two WPI defenders to cap off a 7-0 spurt which made it a 36-30 halftime advantage for the visitors.

A driving finish at the rim by Panayiotis Kapanides(Bedford, Mass.) kept Springfield within 41-34 inside the first 90 seconds of the second half, but WPI took command with a 10-2 run, with a fast-break bucket by Aidan Callahan with 13:26 remaining pushing the lead to 51-36. WPI would go on to lead by as many as 25 points as Springfield played 13 different student-athletes in the frame.
