Box Score Springfield, Mass. – October 24, 2023 – The Springfield College women's volleyball team cruised to a straight-set sweep of WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night in Blake Arena. Springfield was victorious by the set scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-11.
Springfield was once again receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/TARAFLEX Division III national poll this week and remained atop the conference standings as it improved to 22-3, 9-0. The loss dropped WPI to 9-12, 3-6.
Riley Donahue (South Windsor, Conn.) reached the 20-kill mark for the sixth time this season as she pounded 20 kills at a .484 clip to power the Pride to its 16th sweep of the season. Maeve Voltz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was steady in the middle with six blocks and six kills, Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) handed out 36 assists in leading the Pride to a .375 hitting percentage to go along with five blocks, while Ally Townsend (Hummelstown, Pa.) finished the night with a match-best 10 digs.
Donahue delivered back-to-back kills in transition to push Springfield's lead to 6-2 in the opening set as the visitors called for an early timeout. Springfield would push its lead to 18-8 when Voltz and Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) teammed up for a block before Olivia Gentry (Cincinnatti, Ohio) converted her third kill of the night in the middle to conclude the 25-16 win.
Olivia Nealy (Athens, Ga.) ripped a crosscourt kill in transition as the Pride took a 10-5 advantage in the second before the Engineers would burn another timeout at 14-9 following another ace by Nealy. Donahue put away an overpass kill to make it 17-7 and Gentry ripped the Pride's 16th kill of the set to seal the 25-17 win.
In the third, Springfield delivered an impressive .500 team hitting percentage with 16 kills, seven of which came from Donahue. The Pride raced out to an 8-3 lead and never look back as it coasted to a 25-11 triumph to complete the sweep.
Springfield will not play again until next Tuesday when it travels to Rhode Island for a meeting with Salve Regina at 7 pm.
