Springfield, Mass. – October 8, 2023 – The Springfield College men's tennis team hosted the Springfield Invitational this afternoon. Rain on Friday cancelled day one, but all four teams which included the Pride, Endicott College, Nichols College and St. Joseph's College (Conn.) completed play today on the Appleton Tennis Courts.
Junior Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) and sophomore Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, Mexico) went 2-0 in doubles play with an 8-6 win over Enzo Matos and Richard Hartmann of Nichols and an 8-5 win over Christian Kaverud and Marko Karpyuk of St. Joe's. The Springfield tandem of junior Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) and sophomore Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) also picked up an 8-7 (3) win over Caio Deickmann and Oscar Junyet of Nichols.
Sophomore Tim Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) topped Noah Rivera and Mateus Silvestre of St. Joe's, 8-6, while Thongbooncharoen and junior Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall Bridge, Conn.) were victorious over Brett Hodas and Ryan Boucher of St. Joe's, 8-2. Sophomore Nathan Elliot (Gros-Islet, St. Lucia) and junior Zach Taub (New Windsor, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep over the Blue Jays as they clipped Tyler Hussey and Evan Haskins, 8-6.
In singles play, Thongbooncharoen, Sablon and Taub were successful against Nichols as they all won their matches in three sets. Thongbooncharoen edged Matos, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8, Sablon topped Deickmann, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2 and Taub clipped, Kerem Subasi, 7-6, 2-6, 10-8.
Springfield took six of eight singles matches against St. Joe's. Norin and Taub fought from a set down to win by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 and 5-7, 6-3, 10-5, respectively. Kimoto won 6-3, 6-1, Villanueva Abad won 6-1, 6-1, Gomulka won 6-0, 6-2 and Matsudaira won 6-4, 6-3.
The Pride will its fall season with a dual match at Gordon College on Friday, October 13 at 3:30 pm.
