Box Score Middlebury, Vt. - November 14, 2023 - The Springfield College women's basketball team outscored St. Lawrence by a 26-5 margin in the second quarter as it rolled to a 76-52 victory in the opening contest of the Middlebury Invitational on Friday evening.
Springfield improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Saints remained unbeaten at 0-3.
It was a career outing for Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.), as she netted a career-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting off the bench, while Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) netted 20 points of her own after knocking down eight field goals to go along with five steals. Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) contributed 14 points in the best game of her young career and Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) registered 10 points. Springfield owned a 32-14 point-scoring margin in the paint and finished the night shooting 26-56 (46.4%).
After the Saints scored the first six points of the game in the opening two-plus minutes, Springfield answered with a 16-4 surge capped off by a pair from the charity stripe from Leary with just over 90 seconds left in the quarter. The Pride would take a 17-15 lead into the second quarter, and would net eight unanswered points off all turnovers to help the cushion grow to 25-15 with 6:29 on the clock. Springfield wouldn't let up as it shot 10-of-14 in the quarter, getting 11 points from Vinton, to help the cushion grow to 43-20 at the break.
Vinton snagged a steal and drilled a triple to push the Pride's advantage to 32 points with 4:27 remaining in the third and Leary added another trifecta in the waning seconds to help Springfield maintain a 62-35 cushion. The Saints would get no closer than 24 points in the fourth as Springfield would coast to its third victory of the season.
Springfield closes out the weekend taking on host Middlebury at 3 pm on Saturday.
