Springfield, Mass. - March 26, 2023 - The Springfield College men's tennis team opened up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a convincing 8-1 triumph over Emerson on Sunday at Appleton Courts.
For the Pride, it marked its first conference win since it blanked Emerson, 9-0, on April 11, 2018, as it improved to 7-5 on the season.
Springfield cruised in doubles with three victories, beginning with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot by James Foley (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, México) before Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) and Mike Kendrick (Watervliet, N.Y.) delivered an 8-6 win at No. 2. The Pride would head into singles with a 3-0 lead after Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) and Tim Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) prevailed by an 8-7 (3) score at the top spot.
In singles, Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) was first off the court after cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 before Mateusz Czajka (Linkoping, Sweden) clinched the conference win at No. 4 by a 6-2, 6-1 margin. After Emerson prevailed at the top singles spot, Villaneauva Abad notched a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3, Thongbooncharoen followed with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 2 and Zach Taub (New Windsor, Conn.) closed out the afternoon with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Springfield will next host Trinity on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
