Springfield, Mass. – January 27, 2024 – The Springfield College men's volleyball team delivered a three-set win against Elms on Monday night inside Blake Arena by the set scores of 25-13, 25-16, 25-18.
Winners of their last five matches, Springfield, who was ranked sixth in the most recent AVCA Division III National Poll, is now 5-1, while Elms dropped to 1-4.
The Pride hit .391 on the evening as
Ethan Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) racked up 35 assists, six digs, and six kills and twin brother
Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added 11 kills, six digs, and three aces of his own.
James Browning (Santa Monica, Calif.) led all players with 14 kills,
Joel DeCamp (Simi Valley, Calif.) controlled the middle with nine kills on 11 errorless attempts for a .818 hitting percentage, and
Tyler Simmons (Enfield, Conn.) tacked on 10 digs.
Springfield jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first when Browning hammered a ball cross court in transition and would have its lead grow to 14-4 after an Elms swing sailed wide. The hosts would gain set point when
Rami Moursi (Port Washington, N.Y.) put a ball away down the line before
Noah Weislo would pump Springfield's fifth ace of the frame to seal the 25-13 triumph.
In the second, Springfield's offense put together an impressive showing, registering 19 kills at a .621 clip to ease to a 25-16 win. Knotted up at 9-9, Springfield put together an 11-3 surge to go up 20-12 when Browning found the back corner in transition.
Noah Weislo would hammer his sixth kill of the set to wrap up the second-set victory as the Pride took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set featured 10 ties, the last when
Noah Weislo put away a kill to even the frame at 16-all. The kill would be followed by back-to-back terminations by Browning to force Elms into a timeout at 18-16. After a service error, Springfield ended the match on a 7-1 burst, with
Paolo Mondini (Bolingbrook, Ill.) notching the Pride's ninth ace of the night to conclude the sweep.
This weekend, Springfield will serve as the host for the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic and kick off the competition against nationally-ranked Vassar on Friday at 6 pm.
