Worcester, Mass. – October 23, 2024 – The Springfield College women's soccer team grinded out a 1-0 conference victory on the road at WPI on Wednesday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup.
With the triumph, Springfield is 7-3-4 on the season, with a 4-2-2 mark in NEWMAC play. The Engineers also move to 4-2-2 in conference action, and 7-4-4 overall. WPI held the advantage in the majority of the stats on the day, owning a 16-4 cushion in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
However, it was Springfield that struck for the game's only goal with seven minutes left in the first half.
Lexi Stone (Wilbraham, Mass.) played the ball down the left sideline to
Natalia Mottura (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who was able deliver a centering ball into the middle. The ball rattled around between a pair of WPI defenders and their goalkeeper before bouncing to a wide open
Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.), who potted in her team-leading sixth goal of the year.
That was all the scoring Springfield needed as
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made seven saves en route to helping the Pride post its fifth shutout of the season, including the third against conference foes.
On Saturday, the Pride will host Wellesley in a 1 pm contest.
