Women's Volleyball Sweeps Emerson

Springfield, Mass. – October 5, 2024 – The Springfield College women's volleyball team powered their way past Emerson for a straight-set victory on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena by the scores of 25-19, 25-21, 25-15.

In the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash, Springfield improved to 9-4, 3-1 with the triumph, while Emerson fell to 9-8, 2-2.

Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) handed out 28 assists and added eight digs, four kills, and three blocks in helping the Pride to a .255 hitting percentage.  Riley Donahue (South Windsor, Conn.) contributed a match-best 12 kills to go along with nine digs and four aces, while Jodi Saelua (Miliani, Hawaii) and Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) each had eight kills.  Kristen DeLorenzo (Syracuse, N.Y.) ended the afternoon with a match-best 16 digs to highlight a Springfield defense which limited Emerson to a .096 hitting percentage.

After a back-and-forth start to the match, Springfield found itself in an 11-9 deficit following an attack error.  Springfield would would respond with a 6-2 burst to force the visitors into a timeout and extend its lead to 24-18 with a late 4-0 push capped off by a Donahue ace.  Five players had at least two kills in the first set for Springfield, including four from Saelua, as Keaveney closed out the 25-19 win with the Pride's 15th kill of the set.

Trailing 12-9 coming out of an Emerson timeout, the Pride used a kill from Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) to kickstart a 10-1 surge as a kill from Keaveney put the hosts in control at 19-13.  Another balanced attack in the set saw five players again have at least two kills, and Donahue put away her seventh kill of the afternoon for the 25-21 win.

The Pride called for a timeout down 9-8 in the third, but would regroup by scoring the next six points, including three aces from Donahue, as it would run away with the 25-15 win to complete the sweep. In the third, Springfield hit .429 as a team as it racked up 14 kills, including five off the arm of Donahue.

Springfield turns its attention to a conference clash with Smith in Blake Arena on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
