Springfield, Mass. - November 18, 2024 - For the second time this season, Springfield College's
Arsen Shtefan (West Hartford, Conn.) was named the recipient of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Awards presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Shtefan was chosen the top college football player in New England across all Division II and Division III programs, while Frankie Monte from Holy Cross was the Division I honoree.
Shtefan bookended his regular season with the prestigious regional honor as he previously was recognized following his Week 1 performance against WNE when he ran for 215 yards and a score. To date, he is the only Division II or III football student-athlete in New England to win the award multiple times this season, and the first Springfield College student-athlete since Josh Carter in 2011 to win the award twice in a year.
On Saturday, Shtefan led the Pride to a 55-20 victory over Maritime College, clinching their fourth-straight NEWMAC Championship. Shtefan recorded a career-best 231 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, averaging over nine yards per attempt. Entering the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, Shtefan now has 1,286 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, both of which rank in the top seven nationally.
Thanks to his efforts, Springfield improved to 10-0, marking their fourth undefeated regular season in the 134 year history of the program, and pushed their conference winning streak to 26 games.
For the tenth straight year, the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England.
