Worcester, Mass. – December 3, 2024 – The Springfield College women's basketball team defeated Worcester State University, 69-36, in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday evening on the road.
Springfield, winners of three straight, improved to 5-3, while Worcester State moved to 4-4.
Angie Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) and
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) both registered double doubles in the win for Springfield as Czeremcha tallied 20 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks and a steal, while Leary registered 17 points and 10 boards in addition to a pair of steals.
Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) also chipped in with 12 points, nine assists and three rebounds for the Pride.
Tied at six just three minutes into the game, Springfield ripped off 12 straight points – a run that stretched early into the second as the Pride led by an 18-6 margin. Padula led the charge over the run with five points on a jumper in the paint and a trey to open the second period, while Leary tallied a trey of her own in the stretch.
Springfield extended its lead to 17 points at 25-8 on a layup by
Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.) and a jumper in transition by Leary forced the hosts to call a timeout with 3:37 left in the second. Laughlan buried a pair of free throws to push Springfield's margin to 19 before back-to-back three point buckets by the Lancers ended their scoreless streak at nearly seven minutes.
Czeremcha knocked down the first of two shots at the charity stripe with two seconds remaining in the half to take an 18 point lead, 32-14, into the break.
After a tight third quarter that saw Worcester State outscore Springfield by a 20-17 margin, Springfield outscored the host Lancers, 20-2, in the fourth to account for the 69-36 final. In the fourth alone, the Pride went 7-for-12 from the floor, 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 4-for-9 from the free throw line. Springfield didn't allow a bucket from the floor to be made by Worcester State over the final 12:25 of the game as all seven points came from the free throw line.
As a team, Springfield scored 36 points in the paint and held a decisive 44-36 advantage on the glass, while 16 Worcester State turnovers led to 13 Springfield points.
Springfield will host Lasell University on Friday evening in non-conference action at 7:00 pm inside Blake Arena.
