Beverly, Mass. – February 9, 2024 – The Springfield College men's volleyball team earned a straight-set win over Endicott on Friday evening by the scores of 25-20, 25-19, 28-26.
Springfield has now won its last nine matches and moved to 9-1 as it entered the evening ranked fourth in the most recent AVCA/NVA Division III National Poll.
Springfield's block was the difference in the match as they totaled 12.5 team blocks and had five players with at least three blocks.
Sam Levinson (La Grange, Ill.) led Springfield with nine kills,
Ethan Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied six blocks, and
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) finished the night with 28 assists.
Springfield jumped out to a 7-2 lead after an Endicott attack sailed long, but the hosts would rally to knot the set up at 13-13 on a transition kill as the Pride called for a timeout. Levinson sided out out with a kill down the line and
Giancarlo Carrion (Trujilio Alto, Puerto Rico) followed with an ace to give a Pride a two-point cushion it would not relinquish. Mulvaney snuffed out an overpass with a stuff block at 22-17 and Levinson terminated his third kill of the evening for the 25-22 win.
Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Walters delivered a block on the pin to give Springfield a 5-2 lead in the second, but a 4-1 burst by the Gulls, capped off by a stuff block, evened things at 6-6. Clinging to a 12-11 lead, Springfield manufactured a 7-1 run, getting aces from Walter and
James Browning (Santa Monica, Calif.) to have its lead balloon to 19-12. Endicott would get no closer than four points, as another Carrion service ace gave Springfield set point before the Gulls 14
th service error of the night concluded the 25-19 win.
An ace from Rouleau allowed Springfield to seize a 3-0 lead to begin the third, and the Pride would later use a 4-0 spurt highlighted by a solo block from Walters to grow its cushion to 11-6. Endicott would battle back to tie it up at 17-17, but a 3-0 surge put the Pride up 20-17 on a block by Rouleau and Mulvaney. Endicott would battle back with a 7-2 run thanks to four errors from Springfield which gave the hosts a pair of set points. However, Mulvaney answered with a kill and
Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.) and
Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) followed with a huge block on the pin to force extra points. A big swing from Walters would allow the Pride to earn match point before an Endicott miscue concluded the sweep at 28-26.
On Wednesday, Springfield will hit the road again when it travels to take on New Paltz for a 6 pm match.
