Boston, Mass. – March 23, 2024 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to Emerson College, 12-10, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Rotch Field on Saturday afternoon.
Emerson improved to 6-5 and to 1-1 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield is now 0-7, 0-2.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) paced the Pride with three goals for his third hat trick of the season, while
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) posted two goals and an assist and
Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) added a pair of tallies for Springfield this afternoon.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led Springfield with eight groundballs and went 17-for-21 at the face-off X today.
The Pride took an early 2-0 advantage on strikes by Webb and
Aaron Murakami (South Burlington, Vt.) before Emerson knotted the game with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart. It was
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.), however, who gave Springfield a 3-2 edge at the end of the first.
Gage Sperlonga (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Tierney extended Springfield's lead to three midway through the second quarter, but once again Emerson answered as the Pride took just a one goal lead into the break, 6-5.
Two goals from Degnan to open the third pushed Springfield's advantage to three, but over the final 9:22 of the quarter, Emerson found the back of the net five straight times and ultimately outscored Springfield 7-2 over the last 24 minutes of the game to account for the 12-10 final score.
As a team, Springfield held a 48-32 advantage in shots, a 30-22 margin in ground balls and won 22-of-26 face-offs. The Pride also went 16-for-23 in transition.
Malcolm McGrath was a key for Emerson as he made 16 saves in net for the Lions.
Springfield will step out of conference play on Tuesday, March 26 with a match up with Middlebury College at 5:00 pm on Stagg Field.
