Springfield, Mass. - April 13, 2024 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team tied a program record for goals in a game as it toppled Wellesley, 26-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at Stagg Field.
Winners of their last seven outings, Springfield is now 12-2 on the year and a perfect 7-0 against conference foes. The loss dips Wellesley to 2-11, 0-6.
The Pride's 26 goals tied the record it set earlier this season when it bested Salve Regina by a 26-4 margin. Springfield finished this afternoon's game with a 56-10 advantage in shots and a 26-6 edge in draw controls.
Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) netted five goals for the second-consecutive game while
Arielle Johnson (Pomfret, Conn.) added five points, including four assists, and
Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) registered five points, highlighted by four goals.Â
Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) tallied five draw controls and three assists and
Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) produced five caused turnovers to go along with four draws. Â
Wellesley's Anna Blake Patrick made 14 saves in three quarters of action and was impressive between the pipes and Finley Tipton totaled three goals for the visitors.Â
After Tipton netted a power play goal for the Blue at 6:52 of the first to pull the visitors within 3-2, Springfield rattled off four-straight goals, including back-to-back markers from
Lily Johnson, to push its lead to 7-3 with 10:46 left in the first half. With under six on the clock, Tipton would score again to make it an 8-4 game, only to have Andresen pump in a pair of goals down the stretch to send the Pride into the halftime break with a 10-4 edge.Â
The teams traded goals in the opening 1:49 of the third quarter, but Springfield would hold Wellesley off the scoreboard for the reminder of the game while netting the final 14 goals of the contest to run away with the conference win. The Pride would account for nine goals in the third and tack on seven in the fourth, including the final two fromÂ
Kyana Alvarado (Westfield, Mass.).
Springfield will now turn its attention for a showdown with nationally-ranked MIT on Wednesday at 6 pm on Stagg Field.Â
