Springfield, Mass. – April 27, 2024 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 20-8 win over Wheaton on Stagg Field in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash.
The win boosted the Pride's record to 6-9, 5-2 as it clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Wheaton dipped to 8-7, 3-4.
In helping the Pride to its highest goal total of the season,
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) registered three goals and three assists,
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) turned in five points on four goals and an assist, and
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) added three goals and an assist.
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was dominant on the face-offs, going 18-for-20 with 13 ground balls. Springfield ended the game with a 56-30 edge in shots and a 47-15 advantage in ground balls.
After the team's traded a pair of goals in the opening eight-plus minutes of the first quarter, Springfield closed out the frame with three unanswered marks, highlighted by
Nicholas Gorman (Valhalla, N.Y.) blistering in a shot just under the crossbar to cap off an unsettled transition situation in the waning seconds.
The Lyons pulled within 5-3 with a goal under two minutes into the second quarter, only to have Springfield string together a 6-0 spurt which featured two goals from both Nocito and Tierney. Soldo accounted for the Pride's seventh goal of the second quarter as he buried a feed from
Gage Sperlonga (Feeding Hills, Mass.) coming out of a timeout with nine ticks on the clock to make it a 12-4 contest at the half.
Tierney found Nocito for a goal just 47 seconds into the third to keep the scoring rolling and he later got free for an unassisted goal at 3:09 to help the lead balloon to 16-4. The visitors got as close at 17-8 with 8:02 left in regulation before the Pride closed out the contest with the final three tallies, capped off by a strike from
Nicholas Belvedere (Setauket, N.Y.) with one minute left on the scoreboard.
