No. 10 Babson Outlasts Men's Lacrosse In NEWMAC Championship

Babson Park, Mass. – May 4, 2024 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team was upended in the 2024 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Saturday afternoon as it fell to nationally-ranked Babson, 19-8.

The Pride wrap up the season with a 7-10 record as it won seven of its final 10 games of the year en route to reaching the NEWMAC title game for the eighth time in program history.

Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) produced four goals and an assist out of the midfield for Springfield while Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) netted two goals to go along with an assist.  Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) picked up seven ground balls as he went 14-of-26 on face-offs and Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) snagged six ground balls of his own. Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) totaled 12 saves in the setback.

After Babson opened up a 4-0 midway through the first, Nocito delivered back-to-back goals in under two minutes to cut the hosts lead in half with 3:26 on the clock.  Babson would deliver a goal with just six seconds left in the frame to regain a three-goal edge, but strikes from Tierney and Jake Degnan (Mahopac, Mass.) inside the first four-plus minutes of the second quarter made it a 6-4 contest.  However, the Beavers closed out the stanza with a 4-0 push to have its lead balloon to 10-4.

Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) kicked off the second-half scoring with an unassisted marker, but Babson would string together three-straight goals over the next two minutes as their lead grew to 13-5. Tierney's second goal of the afternoon game at 4:41 as the Pride's deficit was sliced to 13-7, only to have the hosts rattle off five-straight goals as it pulled away with a 19-8 triumph.
