Springfield, Mass. – May 9, 2024 – The Springfield College softball team saw its 2024 campaign come to a close this afternoon as the top-seeded Pride fell to sixth-seeded WPI, 9-1, in an elimination game on day three of the NEWMAC Tournament on Potter Field.
Springfield capped its season at 29-10-1, while WPI improved to 23-18-1 and will play fourth-seeded Babson College in an elimination game at third-seeded MIT on Saturday.
After producing 16 hits and nine runs in today's opener against Wheaton, Springfield was only able to muster seven hits and one run against the Engineers. WPI scored at least one run in every innings, while starter Shaina Lazarus, who defeated the Pride for the second time this season, surrendered Springfield's lone run in the bottom of the second on an RBI knock by
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.).
A sacrifice fly in the top of the first gave WPI an early 1-0 edge before back-to-back RBI singles by Destiny Lum and Virginia McKinney extended the Engineers lead to 3-0. A sacrifice fly paired with RBI hits by Lazarus and Meghan Sherwood pushed WPI advantage to 6-1 and then claimed the run rule win with a two-run single by Emma Nagy in the fourth and an RBI groundout by McKinney in the fifth.
Lazarus (9-4) scattered seven hits and stranded eight Springfield runners on base as she pushed WPI into Saturday's matchup with Babson.
At the top of Springfield's lineup, both
Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) and DeRosa totaled four of seven hits for the Pride in today's game.
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.), Michaela Ponticelllo (Gloversville, N.Y.) and
Ava Rainone (White Plains, N.Y.) all collected one hit for the Pride today as well.
