Troy, N.Y. - September 18, 2024 - The Springfield College women's soccer team was upended for the first time this season as it dropped a 4-1 decision to host RPI on Wednesday night.
Both teams are now 3-1-1 after the non-conference clash as each squad totaled 11 shots in the contest, while the Pride owned a 9-2 edge on corner kicks.
The hosts struck for the game's first goal at the 38 minute mark in the first half after the Engineers were able to capitalize on an unsettled situation following a Springfield goal kick. Brooke Miller took a feed from Izzy O'Clair and unleashed a right-footed strike from 35 yards that found the top shelf.
Springfield delivered the equalizer in the 58th minute when
Maddie Daigneault (Watertown, Conn.) sent in a free kick from just inside midfield that
Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.) was able to corral and slot into the right side of the net for her third career strike. RPI would respond with three goals over the next 12-plus minutes, including a pair of O'Clair just four minutes apart. Her first strike was a sensational strike that found the top right corner before she followed up putting away a rebound inside the box after her initial bid was stopped. Sarah Sedlacek would score what would prove to be the game winner in the 68th minute as she was able to sprint pass the Pride defense and blister in a breakaway goal over the outstretched arms of Springfield netminder
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.), who would total four saves in the loss. Â
Springfield will begin New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when it hosts Salve Regina at 1 pm.
